Paper Bridge Instant Challenge

Today, I completed my first instant challenge. Instant challenges make you solve a problem in short time increments. I enjoyed it because it was a fun and interesting way that tests your knowledge, creativity, and problem-solving skills. This instant challenge was about building a bridge out of card stock. The challenge was to try and use one sheet of card stock to make the longest bridge that doesn't touch the ground. The blocks that we used to elevate the bridge were very short, which make the challenge harder than expected. At first, we tried making rectangular beams out of two halves of the sheet. This worked, but it wasn't as long as others were. So, we cut the two halves into fourths so we had four beams. We had trouble keeping them from touching the ground, but we worked to solve that. In the end, we made a bridge that was 21.5 inches long, and we placed 4th.
During the instant challenge, everything was timed. We had to rush to
write the problem., constraints, our research, and our ideas and designs.
We ended up using the beam design, and we placed 4th overall! I
was proud of my design, especially since we had such little time to make it.
